This horrific case ended with Cynthia Vigil’s desperate escape on March 22, 1999, in New Mexico. David Parker Ray and Cindy Hendy were arrested. Cynthia was running down a highway and entered a house. People didn’t know who Cynthia was, but a woman called police and visibly shaken, describing Cynthia’s condition. She was naked, her whole body was bloody and she wore only padlocked chains and an iron slave collar. When they came Cynthia told them that she was a prostitute, but that she had been kidnapped by a man who wore a police officer uniform and he had other police equipment. She entered his car and then she saw a woman. They took her in “Toy box” as David Parker Ray called it. Cynthia Vigil escaped. She was alone with Cindy, and Cynthia stabbed her with an ice pick and ran away. Police got a search warrant and they couldn’t imagine what they were going to find there.
David Parker Ray invested a lot of money and transformed his trailer into a torture dungeon. On the shelves there were books on sexuality, female anatomy, psychology… According to some sources, he also had “The Satanic Bible”, Anton Lavey who was the founder of the Church of Satan. Other sources indicated that this book was on witchcraft. He devised a diagram with description how to inflict unimaginable pain. In the center of the room was a gynecological chair. On the walls there were: bars, used for spreading victims’ legs and arms, surgical blades, clamps, syringes, saws, straps, pulleys, whips, pins, a soldering iron, fishhooks, device for electrocuting victims etc. Bestiality was also included. Victims were held in a padded coffin for a long time. He used inhaler and respirator to revive his victims. There were dolls of naked women, shackled and with signs of extreme torture. There was a mirror, so the victims could see themselves.
He used loudspeaker and play the cassette he recorded in advance, informing victims what he was going to do to them and what they were going to feel. It is 10 single-pages transcribed text. The following is just an insight without going into detail of this horrific transcript:
“Hello there, bitch. Are you comfortable right now? I doubt it. Wrists and ankles chained. Gagged. Probably blindfolded. You are disoriented and scared, too, I would imagine. Perfectly normal, under the circumstances. For a little while, at least, you need to get your shit together and listen to this tape. It is very relevant to your situation. I’m going to tell you, in detail, why you have been kidnapped, what’s going to happen to you and how long you’ll be here. I don’t know the details of your capture, because this tape is being created July 23rd, 1993 as a general advisory tape for future female captives. The information I’m going to give you is based on my experience dealing with captives over a period of several years. If, at a future date, there are any major changes in our procedures, the tape will be upgraded. Now, you are obviously here against your will, totally helpless, don’t know where you’re at, don’t know what’s gonna happen to you. You’re very scared or very pissed off. I’m sure that you’ve already tried to get your wrists and ankles loose, and know you can’t. Now you’re just waiting to see what’s gonna happen next. You probably think you’re gonna be raped and you’re fuckin’ sure right about that. Our primary interest is in what you’ve got between your legs. You’ll be raped thoroughly and repeatedly, in every hole you’ve got. Because, basically, you’ve been snatched and brought here for us to train and use as a sex slave. Sound kind of far out? Well, I suppose it is to the uninitiated, but we do it all the time. It’s gonna take a lot of adjustment on your part, and you’re not gonna like it a fuckin’ bit. But I don’t give a big rat’s ass about that. It’s not like you’re gonna have any choice about the matter. You’ve been taken by force, and you’re going to be kept and used by force… (redacted). Now, as I said earlier, you’re going to be kept like an animal. I guess I been doin’ this too long… (redacted). As far as I’m concerned, you’re a pretty piece of meat, to be used and exploited. I don’t give a flyin’ fuck about your mind or how you feel about this situation. You may be married, have a kid or two, boyfriend, girlfriend, a job, car payment. Fuck it. I don’t give a rat’s ass about any of that, and I don’t want to hear about it. It’s something you’re gonna have to deal with after you’re turned loose. I make it a point never to like a slave and I fuckin’ sure don’t have any respect for you. Here, your status is no more than that of one of the dogs, or of one of the animals out in the barn. Your only value to us is the fact that you have an attractive, usable body. And, like the rest of our animals, you will be fed and watered, kept in good physical condition, kept reasonably clean and allowed to use the toilet when necessary… (redacted). After we get completely through with you, you’re gonna be drugged up real heavy, with a combination of Sodium Pentothal and Phenobarbital. They are both hypnotic drugs that will make you extremely susceptible to hypnosis, autohypnosis and hypnotic suggestion. You’re gonna be kept drugged a couple of days, while I play with your mind. By the time I get through brainwashing you, you’re not gonna remember a fuckin’ thing about this little adventure… (redacted). But you are expendable and it’s no big deal to go out and snatch a replacement. It may sound harsh and cold, but if you give us too much trouble, or if you pose any kind of a threat to us, I won’t have any qualms at all about slicing your throat. Like I said before, I don’t like killin’ the girls that we bring here, but occasionally things happen. What can I say? I would really hate to have to dump that pretty little body off in a canyon somewhere, to rot. I’m not trying to scare you. That’s just the way it is… (redacted). To avoid these punishments, you’re gonna have to be very quiet, very docile, and very obedient and I imagine that’s gonna be very hard for you to do… (redacted).”
Victims had to call him and Cindy, Master and Mistress. “Yes, Master. No, Mistress.”
Video equipment was in the next room. He recorded everything and some speculate that he had shared that with certain group of people, because he was speaking in the camera. Victims were subjected to torture in every possible way. Psychologically, physically and sexually. Sadistic murderers often record their crimes. FBI found video evidence of torture, but victims couldn’t be identified.
David Parker Ray kept extensive diary about everything he did. He wrote that he abducted, tortured, rape and murdered up to 60 females, and kidnapped and raped over 100 females. It had lasted for 50 years. He was giving them sedatives and employed hypnotism to make them forget everything. He washed them to remove all evidence. He considered gay women less likely to have some sexual transmitted disease, but he abducted women whenever opportunity appears, even near his home.
David Parker Ray’s first trial resulted in a hung jury. A retrial led to conviction for crimes against three female victims, including Cynthia Vigil.
One of his victims said that he had told her that she was a good person and that he shouldn’t abduct her. In 2001, he was sentenced to 224 years in prison. He agreed to reveal the locations of several buried bodies, but it didn’t happen. He died of a heart attack in 2002.
His accomplices were his daughter Glenda Jean “Jesse” Ray and partner Cindy Hendy. His daughter was convicted for drugging the drink of a woman at a bar, hitting her on the back of the head, and bringing her home to her father. His partner Cindy Hendy testified against him and received a sentence of 36 years for her participation in the crimes. Dennis Roy Yancy who was a prior accomplice was arrested and convicted for using a rope to fatally strangle a former girlfriend, after David Parker Ray kidnapped and tortured her. During his trial, Ray was calm and even in a good mood. He regretted only because of his house and similar things.
David Parker Ray was born in November 1939, in Belen, New Mexico. He had a younger sister. They lived with his mother’s parents, but they were later sent to live with father’s parents in Mountainair. His grandfather, Ethan Ray, was punishing them harshly. It was severe physical discipline. He was sporadically visited by his violent, alcoholic father, who would supply him with magazines depicting sadomasochistic pornography. At Mountainair High School, in Mountainair, New Mexico, he was allegedly bullied by his peers for his shyness around girls, which resulted in his abusing alcohol and other drugs. He was also socially awkward. Ray’s sexual fantasies of raping, torturing, and even murdering women developed during his teenage years. Based on statements made by Ray, he is believed to have begun assaulting women as an adolescent. His diary gave a lot of information from 1950s to 1999. In his earliest entries, he wrote that he had had a female accomplice even in 1950s. After barely completing high school, Ray found a job as a car mechanic and then joined army. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army, where his service included work as a general mechanic. He became a teacher at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ray then worked as a maintenance man for the New Mexico Parks Department in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, for the entirety of his adulthood until his arrest. He developed his interest in BDSM and that equipment. At the beginning of 1970s he started building his “Toy Box”.
Ray was divorced four times and had two children, including his accomplice, daughter Glenda “Jesse” Jean Ray.
He even alleged to his first wife that he had committed his first homicide sometime in 1957 when he kidnapped a woman, tied her to a tree, and tortured and murdered her. However, authorities were unable to verify his account.
Ray met 37-year-old Cindy Hendy who worked at a state park in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, and who was fleeing convictions on grand theft and drug charges in Washington State. They became romantically involved and bonded over their shared violent sexual fantasies.
He and his father connected through shared interest in hard core pornography. For him, women were either objects, he called them “packages”, or worthy. He was a sexual sadist and psychopath.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 scored an exclusive interview with David Parker Ray just a week after he was convicted on rape and kidnapping charges, in April 2001. David Parker Ray: “I feel raped.”
Reporter: “Have you ever tortured anyone?”
David Parker Ray: “No.”
Reporter: “Did you kidnap anyone?”
David Parker Ray: “No.”
Reporter: “Did you ever do anything against the wishes of a sex partner?”
David Parker Ray: “No. I get my excitement from making a woman happy. My trailer had numerous sex toys of different types, all different fetishes. I got pleasure out of the woman getting pleasure. I did what they wanted me to do.
